ABOUT
OUR NAME
Over the past several years, the theater company known as “Walkabout” has been evolving from an intimate Chicago-based laboratory ensemble into an international artist’s collective. With our expanded global context, it has become increasingly important to address the colonial weaponization of the term “walkabout” against Indigenous Australians. We have chosen to use the name “WENDER COLLECTIVE” to house our work moving forward as we explore new methods of collaboration and collective leadership. With these changes we hope to cultivate enchantment, disrupt hierarchies, and (re)create confluences within the collective and in our communities at large.
We have also set aside time to reflect on how that manifestations of imperialist white-supremacist capitalist patriarchy persist within ourselves and our organization, and are committed to an ongoing process of evolution and accountability.
